ALPA Brings Pilots’ Perspective to FAA Partnership for Safety Symposium
August 18, 2010 - The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) brought the views of nearly 53,000 airline pilots to the FAA’s Partnership for Safety Symposium, held this week in Washington, D.C., and made clear the importance of ensuring that every professional involved in the operation of a flight adheres to the highest possible communications standards.

“Airline pilots learn the importance of adhering to standard procedures and phraseology in their communications and the value of training and discipline early in their basic flight training,” said Capt. John Prater, ALPA’s president, at the conclusion of the FAA symposium. For professional airline pilots, that knowledge is expanded and reinforced as new first officers also receive mentoring from captains. “These principles remain essential to safety no matter how experienced an aviator becomes,” Prater noted.

Deal Ends More Than Two Years of Talks; First Contract for Wasaya Pilots
August 17, 2010 - The Wasaya pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), announced today that they have reached a tentative contract agreement with their management. Should it be ratified by the entire pilot group, the resulting new contract would be the first for Wasaya pilots.

The new two-year agreement provides pay increases, establishes a seniority system, and implements the first sick bank for the pilots. The agreement is scheduled to be put before the pilot group for a vote in the coming weeks.

August 17, 2010 - The pilots of Air Transat, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), resoundingly support conducting a lawful strike if a collective agreement is not reached with their management. In a recent strike ballot issued by the union leadership to the pilot group, an overwhelming 97 percent of pilots voted in favour of a lawful strike, should it become necessary to conclude a fair collective agreement with Air Transat management. The pilots have been in negotiations since January of this year.

August 16, 2010 - Evergreen International Airlines (EIA) crewmembers, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), have rejected a tentative collective bargaining agreement with management. Ninety-two percent of EIA crewmembers participated in the ratification process. Ninety-six percent of voting members cast ballots against accepting the tentative agreement.

ALPA and management negotiated for two-and-a-half years. Prior to the Evergreen crewmembers joining ALPA in 2007, negotiations dragged on for more than three years between the crewmembers’ independent union, The Aviators Group, and management. Mediated talks began in 2005 under the supervision of the National Mediation Board (NMB). The tentative agreement was reached in April 2010.

August 13, 2010 - U.S. senators and representatives have left D.C. for their home districts during the month-long congressional recess, so now is the ideal time to urge them to pass a comprehensive FAA reauthorization bill before the end of the year. The current FAA extension expires September 30, which means there’s little time for negotiations when Congress returns after Labor Day. In addition to providing for stable operations of the FAA and the national airspace system, the bill is a critical step toward modernization and the transition to NextGen.

The bill also includes many long-standing ALPA priorities, such as improvements in runway safety prevention, the development of wake vortex mitigation and in-flight weather detection systems including volcanic ash and icing, requirements for air carrier citizenship, and a study of hardened cockpit doors for all-cargo aircraft.
